On June 29, 2009, Maine's Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Commissioner Roland Martin, issued his
decision that fish passage should be constructed
and maintained at the Cumberland Mills Dam, in order to conserve,
develop or restore anadromous or migratory fish resources.
The Cumberland Mills day is the first dam on the river and stops fish
from reaching their spawning grounds. The five dams upriver from
Cumberland Mills will also require fish passage – once fish are able to
reach those dams.
