      Northeast Chapter

In conjunction with the Stormwater in Cold Climates Conference, the Northeast Chapter of the International Erosion Control Association is sponsoring a one-day Certified Professional in Stormwater Quality (CPSWQ) Primer on Monday, November 3rd. This primer will help prepare you for the Certified Professional in Stormwater Quality (CPSWQ) Exam offered nationally through CPESC Inc. If you plan to apply for certification in the future, or if you're interested in learning more about how professional certification can benefit your career, you don't want to miss this information-packed primer.

What Is CPSWQ? Certified Professional in Stormwater Quality certification provides evidence of qualifications in stormwater management principles and methods. CPSWQ certification is available to those who have the educational training, demonstrated expertise, and experience in computing, analyzing, and evaluating stormwater quality.

Some of the benefits of CPSWQ certification:

  • Enhance your professional credibility
  • Promote public awareness of the stormwater profession
  • Have greater influence on policy decisions affecting technical and professional issues
  • Gain access to educational opportunities and sources of information
  • Improve your career opportunities through professional contacts
How to Register for the Primer. Anyone is eligible to attend the full-day Exam Review Session on November 3 at the Holiday In by the Bay. The cost for this 7 hour session is $110 and includes an exam workbook with essential information for passing the CPSWQ exam. Lunch will also be provided. You may register for the primer simply by checking the appropriate section on the Conference Registration Form. If you’re considering becoming certified in the future, this is a great opportunity to review the essentials of stormwater, hydrology, and urban runoff.

Your Instructor for the Exam Review Session in Portland is Don Lake, P.E., CPESC, CPSWQ
Don worked with the USDA – Natural Resources Conservation Service for 27 years during which he held positions as design engineer, field construction engineer, Project Engineer, State Design Engineer and was the State Conservation Engineer responsible for the agency’s engineering operations from 1983 to 1995. He is the principal author of the “New York Guidelines for Urban Erosion and Sediment Control” and the “New York Contractors Erosion and Sediment Control Field Notebook”. He is an adjunct professor at Syracuse University where he teaches a senior and graduate level course on erosion control and storm water management. He has presented over 300 seminars, workshops, and lectures on these subjects and, in addition to numerous awards he received from state conservation agencies, he was named recipient of the International Erosion Control Associations Sustained Contributor Award for 1996. Don is currently employed by the Cortland County Soil and Water Conservation District as Engineering Specialist to the New York State Soil and Water Conservation Committee.

Who Sponsors CPSWQ Certification? The Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control (CPESC) program has been certifying professionals for more than 20 years. The CPESC program is sponsored by the International Erosion Control Association and the Soil and Water Conservation Society and recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency and the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service. In 1998, the CPESC Council developed a certification program for stormwater professionals who had already obtained CPESC certification. Now, with input from EPA, this CPSWQ certification is available for stormwater professionals who do not necessarily have CPESC certification.
The review session offered on November 3rd at the Stormwater Management in Cold Climates Conference is being sponsored by the Northeast Chapter of the International Erosion Control Association!
